The resources of the Fund, which will largely be provided by personal donations and community backing, will offer financial aid to worthy graduates of Snow Hill High School who, like Jesse, have demonstrated outstanding character and who have shown by their actions a profound kindness, sensitivity and the desire to make the world a better place. The scholarships are not limited to those who choose to pursue college degrees, but rather are devoted to any graduate who has maintained a 3.0 grade point average and who aspires to continue his or her education in any formal fashion at any recognized school.
In early 2009, the tragic death of Jesse Klump cast a pall over the entire community of Snow Hill, Maryland. Jesse was a fine scholar, a gifted athlete and a natural leader whose growth into manhood many in Snow Hill were proud to watch. Beyond his grades or his achievements on the track or the tennis court, however, Jesse had already demonstrated maturity beyond his years and had, by the strength of his character, inspired his peers (and some of us who are a lot older than his peers) to respect and emulate him.
Why "Jesse's Paddle?" Ask any guest at the Pocomoke River Canoe Company, where Jesse worked during several summers, about their brief encounters with him and the answer is obvious. He inspired the creation not only of this scholarship, but also the gathering of his friends and family annually at a paddling event on the Pocomoke River - "Jesse's Paddle" - to raise money for the scholarships.
This is the idea: You ask your friends, family or colleagues to support you with pledges and you join us at Jesse's Paddle. We celebrate Jesse's life, preserve his legacy by helping promising young people continue their educations, and we have a lot of fun at the same time.
Everyone is invited to participate. You can join us, soliciting pledges help sustain the Fund and spending some time with your friends on the prettiest river on the Eastern Shore. If you don't have your own canoe or kayak, one will be provided by the Pocomoke River Canoe Company at no charge, but you must call in advance to reserve a boat. There are canoes, as well as solo and tandem kayaks available.
